What is the difference between a Christian and a Protestant?

Some people don't think we Catholics are Christian and we're always seeing the question, "what is the difference between a Christian and a Catholic?".

Shouldn't the people that post such a question be more explicit and say, 'what is the difference between a __________ and a Born Again Christian, or a Fundamental Christian or a Evangelicals?

It's kind of like saying "what is the difference between Americans and U.S. citizens?

We're all Christians.|||Well, I'm a Protestant, and I know we disagree on some issues. But I can truly say that I believe they're FAMILY disagreements!

Because this passage of Scripture right here:

Ephesians 4:4-6: There is ONE body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all."

says to me that we are UNITED in one body as long as we've put our faith in Jesus Christ for our salvation. That's TRUE Christian unity, and it crosses ALL denominational lines, sister!|||Christians are patient and kind and don't envy others. Christians aren't boastful or puffed up with pride. Christians are well-behaved and aren't self-centered or easily provoked. They don't think evil thoughts, and they don't get mad easily. They don't like sin and are happy when truth reigns. They are strong, faithful to God's teachings, full of hope, and able to withstand all that life throws at them.

That's the definition of a Christian. Everything else is just details.|||What is the difference between Evangelicals and Christians?

What is the difference between Baptist and Christians?

What is the difference between Lutherans and Christians?

What is the difference between Presbyterians and Christians?

What is the difference between Methodist and Christians?

Then some say, What is the difference between Catholics and Christians?

They are all Dumb questions.

We are all CHRISTIANS.

Thanks for your question. You are so right. Instead : say what is the difference between _____ and a ( what ever subgroup they want to call themselves). CHRISTIAN IS THE LARGER GROUP not the subgroup|||Denominationalism is the division of one religion into separate groups, sects, schools of thought or denominations.

Denominationalism as an ideology which views some or all Christian groups as being, in some sense, versions of the same thing regardless of their distinguishing labels, is not accepted by all Christian churches.

The Catholic and Orthodox Churches do not use this term as its implication of interchangeability does not agree with their theological teachings. Denominatinalism is a largely Protestant concept among Christians.|||Christianity is divided into 3 groupr: Catholic ,Orthodox and Protestant( with some 30,000 Bible Alone denominations and independent groups)

There is controversy among Protestants as to who among them is Christian

Are Non Trinitarian Protestants Christian?

Are Protestant groups considered heretical or not 'born again" by other Protestant groups Christian?

There was Christianity for 1500 years before the Protestant forms came forth

Catholics, Orthodox and Trinitarian Protestants have more in common (such as the tenets of the Nicene Creed) than they have that divides

Many Portestant groups ,such as Lutheran, have more in common with Catholicism than they have with many other Protestant groups|||Protestants are Christians.

Catholics are Christians, even though many will tell you they are not.

So Christians are Protestants and Catholics.

People shouldn't ask questions any particular way. They should just be able to ask their question, just as it is.

We're all Christians? We are? Do you mean all Americans? I hope not.|||The difference is night or day. Dark or light. Up or down.

Truly those who deny even "one word, one tittle or jot" of the

teaching of Christ through His Church cannot honestly call

themselves Christians. It is wishful at best.

The difference is everything. Even among the True Christians--

the Roman-Catholics-Of -The-20-Councils-Verifying-Scripture--

there will always be those who "protest" something, putting

themselves silently outside the Church. Their unknown heresies

are as immense as any Protestant's denials. But the Church

looks upon them in the same light--heretics. To die in that

unrepented state is to lose salvation.

The Mission of the Roman Catholic Church has always been

to gather the heretic waywards and bring them into the salvific

flock of the Divine Shepherd. Nothing on earth is more

important! It is the reason Christ was born.

A Protestant is a Christian--unless he or she has thrown aside the moral teachings of Christianity to promote homosexuality, degrade marriage, and advocate prenatal homicide. Anyone pushing for grave sin has no relationship with God, whatever his or her religious organization.

A mild disagreement with my good friend James: The major groups of Christians are Catholics and Orthodox, with apostolic authority from Jesus, mainline Protestants, with good theology but an increasing tendency to reject Christian morality, and evangelicals, with good morality but an increasing tendency to reject orthodox theology in favor of imaginative and anti-historic biblical readings.

Cheers,

Bruce|||Once upon a time there was the Roman Catholic church. At this point is was very corrupt and it angered some people. Martin Luther, a priest, decided to challenge the church. Eventually this led to a separate sect of belief of "salvation through faith." This started the protestant divide from the Catholic belief.

Christianity does contain both Catholic and Protestant belief systems in it.|||Protestants reject some of the beliefs and teachings of the early Apostolic, Christian Church and some of the teachings and beliefs of the first 1500 or so years of Christianity. They also reject the authority of the Church Jesus founded and choose to self-interpret the Bible (which scripture itself condemns). However many of them do accept enough Christian beliefs to be classed as 'Christian', but even so some of their beliefs could be considered heretical.|||In general Christian is the broad umbrella of religious beliefs founded in the teachings of Jesus Christ and his apostles. These agree in what are called the ecumenical creeds. Whether Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic or Protestant, they all agree in these ancient documents stating basic beliefs. Roman Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Protestants (which are groups like Methodists, Presbyterians and Baptists) are all Christian sects (sub-groups). Several of these groups use the word Christian to refer to themselves exclusively. So the word means something different depending on who is using it. That is why the word now is further described like, Born Again Christian, which normally identifies one as a Evangelical Christian (who believe the Bible is without error and that salvation is available by grace through faith alone).|||A protestant is a Christian not of the Catholic or eastern church who deny authority of the Pope and believe in justification by faith alone. There are Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, all different types, but they are called protestants.|||Catholics and Protestants are Christian.

OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST , the one true faith, " Outside of which no one at all can be saved."|||Yes, you are all Christians. You can't convince some people of that, though. If Jesus himself came down and vouched for all of you, they still wouldn't believe it. They would accuse him of being a demon or a false teacher or some such nonsense.|||What is the difference between a protestant and a Christian?

What is the difference between a catholic and a Christian?

You will get the same answer from me, NOTHING. We are STILL all Christians.|||You have made me realize that Christians naturally encompass both Protestants and Catholics whereas the term Protestants means Christian non-catholic. But all in all the meaning of the terms in standard usage is the same as lawyer to attorney. Cheers, g|||Catholicss believe in some different stuff like they pray to marry who speaks to jesus. While Christians prey directly to him. Many people believe when God comes back he is going to destroy the Catholic church which is not true in all cases.|||all americans are not u.s. citizens. ever hear of north and south america? canada? mexico?

very few protestants are the born-again, fundamentalist, evangelicals you mention. ever hear of lutherans? presbytarians? methodists?|||Actually, there are millions of Brazilians, Peruvians, Uruguayans, Argentinians, Paraguayans, Mexicans etc. etc. who are Americans and they are not US citizens. Thats like saying Africans are Ugandan citizens.|||Protestants are a subgroup of Christianity, just like Catholics, Lutherans, Jesuits etc.|||Protestants (mainline) are Christians. Catholics and Orthodox are Christians. Fundies are false christians. A lot of the fundies are also nutjobs.|||The simplest answer is A Christian is a Catholic, and a Protestant is a Heretic.|||Some sects of Christianity claim the term Christian because they ignorantly think they are the only Christians. And so Catholics and Protestants aren't?

What kind of mentality does that show you?...........stupidity !|||only when a person come to Jesus by faith in his finished work at the cross Jesus raises them to life this is being saved from their spiritual death to spiritual life, or they remain dead and no dead people will be in heaven.|||Christians are those who believe in Christ. SO any religion that believes in Jesus is a Christian. Catholics worship Mary and Jesus. Its very confusing.|||anyone who is a follower of Christ is a Christian. Protestants are people who are not with the true church.|||All Protestants are Christian but not all Christians are Protestant.|||not all Protestants are of The True Church(all those of The True Christian Faith)... not all who think they are Christians are... as a matter of fact if they "think" they are they are not..... a True Christian KNOWS there is only One True Church... and KNOWS The Truth

Those who know only the dogma and "tradition" of the papists are not Christians... some who remain among the papists do manage to learn The Truth... but not from the leadership... no priest is permitted to teach The Truth of The Salvation Message and could be kicked out for doing so... none of the leadership of the "Catholic" papists is of The True Church.|||Christians are people who are relying on Christ ALONE for salvation. Their belief in Him is a response to the faith that God put in them. If you are a Christian, it's not faith + baptism/sacraments/catechism or any other thing whatsoever.

Secondly, all Christians MUST be born again. Apart from being born again, the gospel doesn't give you any real hope. It may for a season, but something will assuredly uproot it if it was not planted by God in a born again believer. Check out John 3.

You may think that we are all Christians but when we appear before Jesus, my hope is that He doesn't say "I never knew you" which is what we know He is going to say to some professing Christians according to Matthew 7. Not everybody who says they believe really believes.|||There is virtually no difference between Catholics and Protestants.

One happens to be The Whore and the other the daughter.

Revelation 17:1

And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: (KJV)|||why don't people remember their european history from high school? a long time ago, being christians meant being catholics. some people didnt like how the church was run, so they broke away into their own sects. every sect that broke away from catholicism are protestants, cause they're protesting the catholic church.
